Seniors for Seniors – Recycled Pomeranians and Schipperkes

There are two crucial components to our program that matches seniors looking for love.

Senior Dogs: Recycled Poms rescues small dogs in every stage of life. From puppies to adults to seniors. And because we do rescue so many seniors, and don’t know the status of their health until after their initial vetting, we often find ourselves with hospice rescues and dogs that are closer to the end of their lives, making them unlikely candidates for adoption. That does not stop us from caring for these deserving souls. We take them in and try to give them the best life possible.

Senior Citizens: Studies between 1950 and 2019 show that senior citizens who have pets to love live longer and healthier lives, have lower blood pressure and cholesterol and have a 65% lower chance of a heart attack than seniors without pets. What could be better news?

Recycles Poms Seniors for Seniors Program

RP’s Seniors for Seniors Program is intended to help senior dogs AND senior citizens in the DFW area by matching deserving souls in a furever foster program. RP will continue to pay vet bills and medical expenses (Including mandatory monthly heart worm prevention) for the senior dog for the rest of its life. Your senior dog will come with a collar, leash, tags and will be fully vaccinated.

In return, we would ask our furever fosters to provide food, bed, toys, treats, pill pockets (for meds) and any other supplies that you would like to provide. Most importantly, be willing to share their hearts with a fellow loving senior.

Finding Joy in Senior Pets

We often hear how devastating it would be to fall in love with a senior dog and then lose it within a short period of time. And it is devastating. But knowing that their final days were spent secure with the knowledge they were loved and cared for far outweighs the heartache. It is also a worthy cause and one that helps the pet population’s largest segment of abandoned pets.

Imagine how your love and attention can make a very sad and confused senior dog feel safe, comfortable and happy, perhaps for the first time in their lives. You will have the opportunity to provide them their last and best home. And falling in love with your furever foster is such a positive benefit to you. Several of RP’s fosters focus on the senior population because it is extremely rewarding and the seniors are so grateful. They are usually very happy snuggling and sleeping and make excellent tv viewing companions. Many still love to go for walks and can’t wait to don their leash and explore the neighborhood. And you never know what human relationships may form when two furry friends meet!

We Need You!

We are looking for kindhearted souls to open their hearts and homes to our very special furever fosters. Here are some of the criteria we will use in the approval process:

• For this Program, we consider a senior citizen to be at least 65 years of age.

• You will be vetted as strenuously as are adopters of all of our dogs.

• You should either work from home or be home for a large part of the day.

• You must be able to administer medications. Some seniors take quite a few meds but there are others that are doing well and don’t require meds. It is very common to administer heart meds, diuretics, and anti-inflammatory meds for senior dogs.

• It would be preferable for our senior citizen to be able to take the dog to the veterinarian for checkups and to pick up medications. However, if everything else looks good in your application RP will find volunteers who can help transport. We can also provide meds via the postal services.

We will assign you a foster coordinator/furever matchmaker to work with when you have questions and require input and to provide moral support when needed.

They will help assess what is most important to you in a furever friend, and introduce you to that special someone. You will have the opportunity to meet and greet and see if you are compatible before making a commitment.
